Steve Ross

Contributor par excellence

Steve Ross of Scarborough is regarded as a pioneer for his era in organized track and road racing in Maine. He served as an officer with the Maine AAU for many years and, together with Roland Dyer, organized some of the early summer track meets and road races during the 1960s.

When Dyer was killed in 1971, Ross organized a memorial race in his memory in Winslow where Ross had taught and coached and where Dyer grew up.

Ross, who graduated from Bowdoin where he was a fine hurdler, is one of the state's greatest contributors to track, coaching during the school year and organizing meets for all age levels during the summer as well as officiating.

He was a man known to go by the rulebook and it was never further away than his back pocket.

As a high school coach his boys and girls teams at Scarborough won 11 state titles and four Triple-C championships in the 1980s.

Before coming to Scarborough he had coached and taught at Mexico, Winslow, Lewiston, and Cheverus.
