Scott Brown

A state champion cross-country runner, Scott Brown had a sterling road-racing career running any distance between 5000 meters and the marathon, and made a lifetime of contributions to the sport as an outstanding coach and running team organizer.

Born in Portland, Maine on June 12, 1958, Scott began his running career at Wells High School where, in 1975, he was a State Class B Champion in cross-country. Along with teammate Bob Winn, he led his Wells High team to a runner-up finish in the Class B State Championship meet. After high school he attended Keene State College in New Hampshire.

Scott resided in the Lowell, Mass, and Nashua, N.H. areas where he began his coaching career in the early 1980s. At Milford High School and Bishop Guertin High School, both in New Hampshire, he coached over a dozen athletes who successfully qualified for the New England Championships in several events, including the mile, javelin, pole vault, triple jump and relays.

After college, Brown ran many races in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, competing for the Whirl-Away Team. In 1999 he formed his own team, the PR Racing Team, serving as president and coach. Under his coaching the team excelled, competing well against teams from all over New England.

Running some of his fastest times in the early to mid-1980s, Scott posted these outstanding personal bests:

  • 1981 York Hospital Race, 3 miles 14:25
  • 1983 Boston Marathon 2:33:32
  • 1984 Salisbury Winner's Circle, 4 miles 19:11
  • 1984 25K, Cape Ann 1:22
  • 1985 Summer Night 8-K 24:45
  • 1985 Wells Recreation 15K 48:38
  • 1985 Methuen 10 miler, 51:49
  • 1986 Manchester, mile 4:24

He recalls a cross-country 10-K best 31:10 and a 2-mile best of 9:24. In the mid-1990s he had “a resurgence” and ran some impressive times, including the Yarmouth Clam Festival 5-miler in 24:38, the Eliot 5-K in 15:00, the Great Pumpkin 10-K in 31:11, and a half-marathon personal best of 1:09:45.

Returning to Maine in the late 80s, Scott coached high school track and cross-country at Oxford Hills High School, Dirigo High School and Lewiston High School. While coaching at Dirigo High School, Brown and George Conant resurrected the track program, and in the second year of the program, they took Dirigo to a regional championship in Class C. Scott helps officiate indoor and outdoor track meets at Bates College in Lewiston. He has also directed several road races throughout the years and continues to assist and promote many races in the Lewiston area.

He combined with Tim Clough in the mid-1990s to form the Lewis and Clark triathlon team. The duo won several two-man events throughout the state. In 2003 Scott ran a 20-mile timed run in 1:59:48 on the Bates College track, breaking a national record by over 8 minutes in the 45-49 age group. A USATF official did the timing, but later discovered that the time was disallowed by USATF because Scott did not race against anyone.

Brown takes great pride in his PR Racing Team which has, under his coaching, won or placed high in the New England Grand Prix series. A PR Racing Team member states: “What stands out to me, with Brownie, has always been his commitment to whatever he is doing – whether it is his running or getting the other team members ready to run up to their potential. Sometimes I think he gets more excited when we run well than he ever has for himself.”

Sidelined with hip problems in 2006, Scott had to stop running. After hip surgery, he completed the 2008 Beach to Beacon 10-K in 37:10, finishing third in the 50-54 age group. A Lewiston resident, he is married to masters runner Kelly Brown, and the couple has five children.
